Sometimes, mature Galahs start behaving badly. This is probably due to lack of attention. They need intellectual stimulation and Galah Cockatoo interaction everyday. If your bird's cage is in an isolated or poorly lit room, you might experience this behavior. Galahs make wonderful pets especially when hand-raised. They are extroverted, affectionate and friendly. They are playful and intelligent and like other cockatoos need to be kept entertained and occupied at all times. They are independent birds and not needy like other species. They can therefore be left alone for longer periods of time. Sometimes, mature Galahs become unpredictable. If this is the case, you should not let them perch on your shoulder. They are not very noisy but do make noises early in the morning and evening. You can keep them in apartments. They are happy birds, and at times, do an excited dance on the cage floor, stomping their feet, flapping their wings and spinning in a circle whilst making an excited call. This sometimes frightens owners as they think they are ill. So, do not worry, it's just that your pet's having a bit of fun. Pet Quality Galah Cockatoo They are quick learners and can be trained to perform several tricks. Often you see them in bird shows, where they fly through several hoops. Galahs are good talkers and males usually have better talking ability than females. However, their talking ability isn't on par with that of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos or the Corellas. Rose-breasted Cockatoos have tendency to become overweight so you need to monitor their food and diet properly. Stick to a low fat diet and include a variety of greens. They are also prone to getting fat tumors and need plenty of exercise. As these birds are popular but relatively expensive, they are often smuggled. Eggs are taken from nests, as birds can be noisy and difficult to be illegally transferred. Avoid buying unweaned Galahs between July and September, as there is a fair chance that they have been smuggled. Galahs make high-pitched, splintered "chill chill" and harsher screeches. Voice Galah Cockatoo Housing: Caging Bar Spacing You should select a cage for you Galahs with utmost consideration. Your pet will spend a lot of time in it and it has to be practical yet comfortable. If you are buying an iron cage, make sure it is protected with paint so as to prevent rusting. Ideally, the paint should be powder-coated so that it will not flake or rust. Zinc and lead levels in the paint should be low as these metals are very toxic. Acrylic cages are very popular, but have to be cleaned and disinfected often. This kind of cage also has poor air exchange, which makes it a haven for other organisms. The cage you buy should have a grate as well as a bottom tray. The grate should be relatively higher than the tray so that your bird doesn't get its feet into the feces in the tray. Spacing between these bars is very important. The gap should be Galah Cockatoo wide enough for the bird to be able to look outside clearly. Make sure that your bird can't wedge its head between the bars of the cage. The ideal gap should be around three-quarters of an inch. The cage has to be big enough for the Galahs to extend their wings. It should also comfortably house a few perches that your pet can use for climbing. There also has to be enough room for toys and feeding dishes. |
